Jimmy Got Soul 🕺🏾
* in Oprah’s voice * I. Love. Dreamgirls. The Dreamgirls movie is in my top 5 greatest movie musicals ever because the cast, music, and story are everything. Eddie Murphy as Jimmy Early was next level electric. When PINBILL was coming together, I knew I wanted to design a Jimmy pin.
My first idea was to design something like the marquee. The thunderbolt and lettering were cool, but the rest of it didn’t really read as a marquee. So I changed directions.
I tried this Looney Tunes riff, but that made no sense at all. The color palette was sweet though! I focused on simplifying and just put Jimmy Got Soul on a vinyl record. Instantly, that felt right.
Curtis, the show’s antagonistic record producer is shady AF. Even though Curtis fires Jimmy after he performs Jimmy Got Soul at the Rainbow Records concert, I imagine Curtis would still want to squeeze money out of it.
So publishes the song. But because it’s still an embarrassing moment for the record company, he puts it on the
B-side.
